Vol. 377 No. 9

Written Answers. - Registration of Sea-going Vessels.

137.

asked the Minister for the Marine the number of foreign owned sea-going vessels which are registered in Ireland; and if there has been any dramatic increase in registered numbers since 1973.

There are 28 non-Irish owned sea-going vessels currently on the Irish ship and fishing boat registers. A ship or sea fishing vessel may be registered under the Irish flag if it is wholly owned by an Irish citizen, an Irish body corporate (a company having its registered office and its principal place of business in Ireland) or a citizen or body corporate which has exchanged registry rights with Ireland, i.e. the UK and certain Commonwealth countries.

The UK is the only reciprocating state, with vessels on the Irish registers. There were nine UK owned vessels registered in 1973.
