Vol. 377 No. 9

Written Answers. - County Galway Pier Road Repairs.

150.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make funds available to Galway County Council for emergency repairs to be carried out on the road leading to Ardmore pier, County Galway which is used extensively by heavy vehicles servicing Emerald Fisheries seafarm which is supplied from Ardmore pier.

As the road in question is a county road, primary responsibility for the planning and execution of any works on the road, including the timing and provision of the necessary finance, rests with Galway County Council. The local authority may, at its discretion, use the block grant for roads paid annually by my Department to supplement expenditure from its own resources on improvement works on such roads. A block grant of £1.055 million was allocated to the local authority in 1988. A grant of £1.08 million was also allocated to the local authority in 1988 for strengthening works on county roads.

The cost of maintenance works on county roads falls to be met by local authorities from their own resources. State road grants are not made available for this purpose.
