Vol. 377 No. 9

Written Answers. - Developing World Child Mortality.

41.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the fact that each week more than a quarter of a million young children die in the developing world; and his Department's response to the Grand Alliance for Children as sponsored by UNICEF.

I am aware of the tragic fact that over a quarter of a million young children die in the developing world each week from preventable causes. I fully endorse the call by UNICEF for the mobilisation in each developing country of a "Grand Alliance for Children", aimed at giving parents the knowledge and access to resources needed to save their children from premature death. My Department continue to support the work of UNICEF in developing countries through their annual voluntary contributions to the budget of the organisation and through direct funding of child immunisation and other primary health care programmes in the Irish aid priority countries.
