Vol. 377 No. 9

Written Answers. - Malting Barley.

109.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food his views on whether the growing of malting barley can be expanded with a view to penetrating further in northern European markets.

I believe there is scope for increasing the production of malting barley in this country for use on the Irish market and for sale on export markets either as malt or malting barley. It is essential, however, that the quality of product should meet customer requirements. The variety used, the time of sowing, management during the growing season, with particular reference to nitrogen content, and care in handling the crop at harvest and drying time, are some of the factors to which special attention must be paid if we are to be successful in availing of these market opportunities.
