Vol. 378 No. 3

Written Answers. - Remedial Education.

149.

asked the Minister for Education the number of children in need of remedial education in a school (details supplied) in Dublin 7; and the number required by her Department for the sanction of a remedial teacher.

Remedial teaching posts are allocated in accordance with a priority of educational need in the light of the resources available to the particular schools.

A significant number of pupils in certain classes in the school in question are in need of remedial education.

For this reason, and as many of the pupils come from a disadvantaged background, this school was allocated two concessionary teaching posts over and above the staffing quota which the enrolment warrants under the rules.

These posts can be deployed flexibly at the discretion of the school authorities to meet the needs of the school.

In the circumstances the question does not arise of approving a further concessionary post for remedial teaching in this case.
