Vol. 378 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cork-Dublin Ryanair Application.

21.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the reason an application made by Ryanair for a licence to operate the Cork-Dublin route was rejected and if he will now reconsider his decision to allow competition on this route as it is thought that the Aer Lingus fare of £89 return is excessive.

I refused to approve proposed services by Ryanair on the Cork-Dublin route, because I was satisfied with the range and quality of existing services on the route. I also refused to approve a proposed Aer Lingus service on the Dublin-Connacht route for the same reason. I am, however, conscious of the need to develop these domestic routes and to encourage lower fares to serve the best needs of the consumer. With this in mind I have indicated to the airlines involved that I proposed to review my decisions in twelve months time in the light of traffic development trends and fares initiatives taken in the meantime by the incumbent carriers.

As regards fares, I should point out that there is no £89 return fare on the Dublin-Cork route. The current return fares on the route are: an unrestricted fare of £94; a 3-day excursion fare of £65 and a 7-day pex winter fare of £39.
