Vol. 378 No. 3

Written Answers. - Air Safety.

25.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the number of reported near misses involving aircraft in Irish airspace in the past five years; the number (a) involving passenger aircraft and (b) the number involving military aircraft; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A total of six air misses were reported during the past five years in respect of aircraft operating in Irish controlled airspace. Of these, three involved passenger aircraft in reported air misses with other passenger aircraft, two involved passenger aircraft with civil helicopters and the sixth involved a passenger aircraft with a foreign military aircraft.

In all six cases, no avoiding action was taken by pilots and, accordingly, these reported air misses were considered to be in the low risk category.

All reported air misses in Irish controlled airspace are fully investigated and, where necessary, appropriate measures are taken to ensure that aviation continues to be conducted in a safe manner.
