Vol. 378 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dublin Airport Garda Station Proposal.

49.

asked the Minister for Justice if it is intended to use members of the Garda Síochána for regular duties in and about Dublin Airport.

50.

asked the Minister for Justice if there has been a change of policy regarding the involvement of the Garda Síochána in security arrangements at Dublin Airport; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

51.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement regarding the relative roles in security and law enforcement of the Dublin Airport Police and of the Garda Síochána, within the perimeter of Dublin Airport.

52.

asked the Minister for Justice the policy decision which applies regarding the operation of community policing in north County Dublin in general and in Dublin Airport in particular; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 49, 50, 51 and 52 together.

I assume that these Questions have arisen from the proposal to open a Garda station at Dublin Airport. This proposal does not involve any change in the roles of either the Garda Síochána or the Airport Security Force. The Garda have responsibility for the overall prevention and detection of crime in the airport area, as in all other areas, while the Airport Security Force is, and will continue to be, responsible for the enforcement of the Airport by-laws.

In my reply to Question No. 72 on 11 February and Questions Nos. 10 and 21 on 18 February 1988, I dealt with the community policing schemes recently introduced by the Garda Síochána on a pilot basis in eight areas of the Northern Division of the Dublin Metropolitan Area. These schemes do not involve Dublin Airport.
