Vol. 378 No. 7

Written Answers. - Maximum Prices Order.

42.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he intends to implement the recommendation of the Restrictive Practices Commission of a maximum prices order for bread and a fixed price for milk; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I do not believe that it is necessary to introduce a maximum prices order for bread as there is significant price competition for this product. I would have to say that past experience with maximum price orders for basic foods would seem to indicate that prices tend to reach the maximum level fixed under the legislation.

The question of a fixed price for milk is primarily a matter for the Minister for Agriculture who has been giving some consideration to the question in the context of other matters affecting that sector.
