Vol. 378 No. 7

Written Answers. - Industrial Development State Agencies.

53.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce in relation to departmental supervision of the industrial development State agencies, he will outline the nature, extent and frequency of interaction; and the plans for change he has in that respect.

Departmental supervision of the industrial development agencies arises from: (i) the requirements of the relevant legislation and memoranda of association under which the agencies were established; and (ii) the general supervision of their activities and policy direction within my functional responsibilities.

The level and frequency of interaction varies from agency to agency depending on the issues involved. I am in touch with the chairman-chief executive of the agencies as required. Departmentagency liaison meetings take place at regular intervals at senior management level. My Department is represented also on the boards of IDA, Shannon Development, Eolas and NADCORP. The Department is also represented on other committees as appropriate. On an ongoing basis my Department maintains regular contact with the agencies in pursuance of its general supervisory functions in relation to financial returns, achievement of policy objectives and review of programmes. I am satisfied with the current supervisory relationship between my Department and its industrial development agencies. The situation will continue to be subject to review.
