asked the Minister for Defence the pay, working conditions, hours of work, availability of overtime, and holiday entitlements in respect of civilian switchboard operators and other personnel of similar grade employed by the Defence Forces and located at various military barracks throughout the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Telephonists in the Dublin area work an average of 43½ hours a week and those in the other areas work 80 hours over ten days each two weeks. As the former work during mealtimes, they are paid at overtime rates in respect of the time involved. At certain locations telephonists work a limited amount of overtime, as required by the exigencies of the service.

Telephonists with a working week of five days are granted 18 working days holidays and those with a working week of six days are granted 21 working days holidays each year. They are also granted three privilege days leave annually.
