Vol. 379 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fort Camden, Cork.

131.

asked the Minister for Defence if arrangements are being made to turn Camden Fort, County Cork, into a museum of military and naval history; if so, who will be responsible for the museum, Cork County Council, Bord Fáilte or some other body; if in the event of the fort being turned into a museum he will arrange to hand over, free of charge, to those running the museum; and when such arrangements will be completed.

Limerick West): My Department have no plans to establish a museum at Fort Camden. However, Cork County Council have indicated that they are interested in having the fort developed as a military museum and have suggested that the fort should be transferred for a nominal sum to another public body such as the council. In a letter to the council dated 4 December 1987, my Department stated that any firm proposals from the council in regard to the fort would be fully considered. There has been no communication from the council in the matter since then.

In November 1987 permission was conveyed to Bórd Fáilte to carry out an architectural plan and feasibility study of the fort to assess its potential for tourism purposes.
