asked the Minister for Education the amount of money spent on mathematics inservice courses for primary teachers each year for the past seven years; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The information requested by the Deputy is shown below. The figures include expenditure on inservice courses on mathematics, and remedial courses and courses for children with special learning difficulties, where mathematics was embraced in addition to other aspects of the curriculum. 1981, £18,670; 1982, £21,555; 1983, £22,720; 1984, £25,240; 1985, £28,520; 1986, £28,650; 1987, £29,830.

This theme was embraced in inservice courses on the teaching of Irish and English and in remedial courses and courses for children with special learning difficulties. The approximate expenditure on such courses from 1981 to 1987 was as follows:— 1981, £28,330; 1982, £36,860; 1983, £40,150; 1984, £64,750; 1985, £74,620; 1986, £73,350; 1987, £62,720.
