Vol. 379 No. 7

Written Answers. - Physical Education.

70.

asked the Minister for Education if it is her intention to have a course committee on physical education set up, similar to those in other subject areas, as an integral part of the on-going work of the curriculum development.

The plan of work of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment for its course committee relates to the specific task of putting in place a unified system of assessment and certification to replace the existing Day Vocational (Group) and Intermediate examinations.

The council are also considering the broader curricular issues of physical education in the school curriculum. An initial exploratory meeting between the executive of the council and interested parties was held on 28 March, 1988, at which it was decided to recommend to the council that a working party on physical education be set up to advise on these curricular issues. I am awaiting the outcome of these discussions.
