Vol. 379 No. 9

Written Answers. - Insurance Cover for Jewellery.

71.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the difficulties at present being experienced by goldsmiths throughout the country who are unable to obtain insurance cover for items of jewellery because of new legislation which only allows for cover to be provided by insurance companies which are based in Ireland; and in view of the fact that many such jewellers are unable to obtain cover from Irish companies, if he will review the matter urgently to ensure that cover is provided as heretofore by overseas companies or by Irish companies.

There has been no recent change in the law governing the taking out of insurance in Ireland. In the case of non-life insurance the relevant legislation is the Insurance Act, 1936, supplemented by the European Communities (Non-Life Insurance) Regulations, 1976.

I am not aware of any difficulties being experienced by goldsmiths seeking to obtain insurance cover in Ireland for items of jewellery.

If the Deputy has details regarding specific cases of difficulty these could be forwarded to the insurance section of my Department for investigation.
