Vol. 379 No. 9

Written Answers. - Television Reception.

74.

asked the Minister for Communications if his attention has been drawn to the severe interference being caused to television reception in the Foxrock area of County Dublin caused by cross modulation betwen RTE 1 and a pirate radio station; the action he proposes to take to rectify this problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

RTE who have statutory responsibility for the investigation of interference to reception of their programmes, report that they are not aware of any difficulties in the Foxrock area.

I am aware that Cablelink Ltd., the cable television licensee for the area have just recently received a complaint of poor service in the Foxrock area. I understand that the cause is not yet established but that the company are investigating the matter with a view to identifying the source of the interference and eliminating it. It is by no means certain that the source of the problem is an illegal broadcasting station.

Any illegal broadcasting station is subject to action under the Wireless Telegraphy Acts at any time and I will not tolerate interference to licensed services.

75.

asked the Minister for Communications if his attention has been drawn to the poor television reception being experienced by residents of Maynooth, County Kildare; if he has any plans to improve the situation; if he will give an indication as to the likelihood of improvement in the pipe television reception in the near future.

My Department have received complaints of very poor cable service in Maynooth. An application has been received from the current licensee to transfer the licence to a new operator. This application is being examined at present. If my Department can be satisfied that the proposed operator offers the prospect of a significantly improved quality of service to subscribers to the cable system the transfer will be favourably considered.
