asked the Minister for Health the reason a person (details supplied) in County Limerick who was employed as a cleaner in Barrington's Hospital, Limerick was informed in writing that she would be entitled to a redundancy lump sum payment of £1,514 when the hospital closed and was subsequently informed verbally that she would only be entitled to £1,169 and received a cheque for this amount; the correct figure in this case; and the way in which it was calculated.

The terms of the Government's early retirement/voluntary redundancy scheme applied in this case. The scheme provided for a payment on the basis of two weeks pay per year of service plus statutory entitlements in this particular case.
While initial information supplied by the hospital to the individual involved indicated the likelihood of a higher severance payment, this calculation was based on incorrect information regarding her length of service. I am satisfied that the payment finally made was correct having regard to the individual's remuneration and length of service.
