Vol. 380 No. 3

Written Answers. - Disabled Person's Maintenance Allowance.

68.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the hardship being suffered by a person (details supplied) in County Kerry who recently had her disabled person's maintenance allowance discontinued to her and who is now in receipt of unemployment assistance; and in particular, the hardship ensuing from the loss of ancillary allowances accompanying the allowance.

Payment of disabled person's maintenance allowance in any individual case is a matter for determination by the health board concerned having regard to all the relevant circumstances of that case.

I had inquiries made of the Southern Health Board in this case and have been informed by the board that payment of the allowance was discontinued on medical grounds with effect from 26 March 1988. The applicant has now appealed the decision and her appeal is at present being considered by the board. It is understood that the applicant has also applied to the Department of Social Welfare for a single woman's allowance. In the meantime she is in receipt of £24 per week supplementary welfare allowance.
