Vol. 380 No. 3

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Repeat Fees.

75.

asked the Minister for Education the number of students attending five-year cycle schools who have been required to pay the £200 fee to repeat the leaving certificate in 1988.

In the 1987-88 school year a total of 6,459 pupils who had already sat the leaving certificate examination were enrolled in second level schools to repeat the final year of the leaving certificate course.

As the parents of 1,428 of these pupils were the holders of a current medical card they were exempted from the repeat fees. This left a total of 5,031 pupils liable for repeat fees. My Department does not have information on the number of these pupils who had previously been attending five year cycle schools.
