Vol. 380 No. 4

Written Answers. - Newbridge (County Kildare) Halting Site.

134.

asked the Minister for the Environment the reason funding continues for the halting site at Tankardsgarden, Newbridge, County Kildare, when projects repeatedly fail; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that departmental guidelines have been largely set aside in the new plans for the site; whether work will be carried out to improve the condition of the site; and if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that this site is to be funded under the new scheme when such funding is strictly reserved for new sites.

Kildare County Council have submitted proposals to the Department for the provision of a fully serviced residential caravan park at Tankardsgarden, Newbridge, County Kildare, on a site previously used by travellers but lacking basic sanitary etc. facilities.

The development will consist of seven bays with water and sanitary facilities and a caretaker's office. The proposed development is in line with the Department's guidelines for residential caravan parks for travelling people. This proposal is seen as a way of improving the situation in Newbridge for both the travellers and the settled community. Kildare County Council are satisfied that the location is suitable for such a facility. The council were given approval to proceed to tender stage in January 1988.

The cost of the full development of the caravan park is properly chargeable to the capital allocation for the provision of residential caravan parks.
