Vol. 380 No. 4

Written Answers. - Disposal of Clinical Waste.

153.

asked the Minister for Health the safety guidelines which are in force in our hospitals and elsewhere in regard to the disposal of clinical waste and in particular, in relation to the disposal of needles used by those infected with hepatitis B or AIDS.

Procedures and guidelines for the disposal of clinical waste are drawn up in each hospital having regard to internal operational policies.

Needles and sharps used in hospitals are disposed of in special containers and, as with clinical waste, these containers are then incinerated.

Major health boards and voluntary hospitals also have infection control committees who would at their own discretion or by request examine any aspect of infection in the hospital environment and make recommendations.
