asked the Minister for Health the funds which he has allocated for the development of phase 2 of Castlebar General Hospital, County Mayo, in 1988; and when he expects work to commence on the project.

My priority in relation to capital developments at the General Hospital, Castlebar, is to equip and commission the phase I development which has been completed recently and I have allocated £1 million in the current year for this purpose.
I cannot at this stage give any definite commitment as to when the phase 2 development can proceed. However, I am keeping the position under active consideration with a view to allowing building to commence at the earliest possible date within the constraints of available capital resources for the health services.
In any event the phase 1 development which has been completed at a cost of £11 million will bring about a vast improvement in the facilities available in the hospital.
