Vol. 380 No. 4

Written Answers. - St. Michael's House (Ballymun) Lands.

18.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the concern of the residents of St. Canice's Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9, about the deplorable condition of the lands around St. Michael's House, Ballymun Road, Dublin 9, having regard to the fact that there is an overgrowth of weeds on these lands which are never removed; that rubbish is dumped on part of the land; and that local residents complain about an infestation of rats there; if he will have an investigation carried out into the reason these lands are left in this condition; and the further plans the Eastern Health Board has for this land.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the land surrounding St. Claire's Home which adjoins St. Michael's House and which occupies an area of approximately 35 acres. The hospital buildings and immediate environs cover five acres which are maintained regularly by the Eastern Health Board's maintenance staff.

The remainder of the site is cut and cleared as required. I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that, given the large land area involved, it is not always possible to maintain the site to the standards everyone would like. However, arrangements are in fact in train at present to clear the remainder of the site.

The board intend to use a large part of the remainder of the site for the further development services for the elderly.
