Vol. 382 No. 1

Written Answers. - “Children at Play” Signs.

131.

asked the Minister for the Environment if the environmental unit, formerly An Foras Forbartha, is carrying out an evaluation of the effectiveness of children at play signs; when this study was started; and when a recommendation will be available.

The study to which the Deputy's question refers was commissioned by Dublin Corporation in March 1987 and was undertaken jointly by the Department of Psychology of University College Dublin and An Foras Forbartha in June-July 1987.

The study's primary objectives were to evaluate the intelligibility of a traffic sign purporting to denote children playing, to assess the impact of the presence of the sign on the speed of vehicles in the areas in which it was erected and to make recommendations to counteract the problem of traffic speeding through residential areas. I understand that the findings of the study will be submitted to the corporation shortly.
