asked the Minister for Health the precise proposals made to (a) St. Vincent's Hospital, Dublin 4; (b) St. Michael's Hospital, County Dublin; (c) St. Columcille's Hospital, County Dublin and (d) the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, Dublin 2 concerning the number of acute beds in 1989 in each hospital; the specialities allocated to each hospital; the complement of beds in each of these hospitals in (i) 1982, (ii) 1984, (iii) 1986, (iv) 1987 and (v) 1988; and the budget and number of staff of each of these hospitals at these dates.
Ceisteanna — Questions Oral Answers - Dublin Hospitals Acute Beds.
As part of the review of hospital services announced last year, discussions are ongoing between officials of my Department and the hospitals concerned on the provision of hospital services in the south-east Dublin-east Wicklow areas. These discussions have concentrated on planning for the provision of an integrated hospital service for the catchment area. The details of such a plan have not yet been finalised but the broad thrust of the proposal would see the fullest co-ordination of the respective roles of St. Vincent's Hospital, St. Michael's Hospital, Dún Laoghaire and St. Columcille's Hospital. All three hospital authorities are supportive of this proposal. The precise future role of each of the three hospitals and the service links between them have yet to be agreed. I would hope to have the full agreement of all the hospitals concerned within a relatively short time.
The transfer of services from the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital is part of my Department's policy of locating specialised services such as ophthalmology on a general hospital campus and discussions are ongoing with the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital on a transfer of its services to appropriate general hospitals in Dublin and to the Midland Health Board.
The further information requested by the Deputy is set down in the tabular statement which will be circulated in the Official Report.
