Vol. 382 No. 1

Written Answers. - Public Dental Services.

46.

asked the Minister for Health if he will give details of proposed improvements in the public dental services planned in 1988.

It is a matter for the health boards to allocate the funds available to them between the different services they provide and therefore the implementation of improvements in the level of dental service provided for eligible persons is a matter for the boards in the first instance. However, my Department are examining, in conjunction with the Irish Dental Association, how best to organise services for eligible patients, the associated cost and the manner in which services can best be provided, given available resources. I have also directed the Minister of State at my Department to review the dental services generally and his report is expected shortly.

My Department are also engaged in discussions with the two dental hospitals with a view to ensuring that the maximum numbers of treatments are delivered by them to eligible persons and that eligible persons are afforded priority over those who are not eligible.
