Vol. 382 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tolka River Pollution.

107.

asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the recent pollution of the Tolka River and the consequent death and damage of many fish; if the matter has been investigated; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the recent pollution of the Tolka River which caused a large fish kill in the river.

Action to bring the polluter to task is a matter for the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board under the Fisheries and Water Pollution Acts.

I understand, however, that the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board are applying the law as rigorously as possible in an endeavour to ensure that the polluter pays for the damage and is restrained from polluting again. The upper part of the river has in the meantime been restocked with brown trout as part of the effort to regenerate the river.
