Vol. 382 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Permanent Defence Forces. Female Personnel.

9.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will lift the ban on enlistment of female personnel for general service in the Permanent Defence Forces, which has been in operation since 1981.

(Limerick West): Recruitment for general service has been suspended since 1981 and has been replaced by special intakes of recruits as required to meet essential needs.

It is necessary to concentrate on maintaining the operational strength of the force. Because of the non-combatant role of female personnel in the Permanent Defence Forces recruitment has had to be confined to male personnel in recent times.

The question of enlisting female personnel is reviewed periodically in the light of current strengths and commitments. As I have indicated, this matter is under review and will be given sympathetic consideration by me.
