asked the Minister for the Environment if he is introducing regulations to ban the use of cans as containers for beer and minerals; and if so, if he will ensure that the regulations apply to all products whether home produced or imported.
Written Answers. - Beer and Mineral Cans Ban.

The initial Irish programme to implement Directive 85/339 which was presented to the EC Commission in February 1987 provided for a prohibition on the use of cans for the marketing of beer, whether domestically produced or imported. There was no provision for a similar prohibition on cans for soft drinks. Some aspects of the programme have been under recent review and I have not reached a final decision in relation to the making of regulations to ban the use of beer cans.
