Vol. 382 No. 11

Written Answers. - VEC Scholarship.

86.

asked the Minister for Education the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork has failed to qualify for a Vocational Education Committee scholarship in view of the fact that other students in the College of Art, Commerce and Technology, Limerick, with similar academic qualifications are eligible; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Under the terms of the vocational education committee scholarship scheme which is administered by vocational education committees, scholarships may be renewed annually subject to satisfactory reports on the progress, conduct and attendance of the scholarship holder. In the case mentioned by the Deputy the student received a scholarship in respect of year one of an accountancy course but passed only one of five subjects. He subsequently repeated his year one examinations in December, 1987 but failed two of the subjects again. Until such time as the student passes all of his year one examinations the vocational education committee in question are not prepared to renew his scholarship in respect of year two of the course.
