Vol. 383 No. 8

Written Answers. - National Lottery Allocations.

73.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the total amount of moneys allocated to date to projects in south west Cork out of the proceeds of the national lottery; if he will give details of same; and if he will give the proportion of such moneys expressed as a percentage of total allocations from his Department.

Funds from the national lottery have been allocated to my Department for disaster relief in developing countries and for cultural relations with other countries.

As I indicated in replies to questions on 28 May 1988 and on 19 October 1988, £400,000 has been allocated to date from the national lottery to my Department for the promotion of cultural relations with other countries. Grants are made under this heading by the Minister for Foreign Affairs on the advice of the Cultural Relations Committee and go towards the promotion of Irish cultural and artistic events, lecture tours, etc. abroad.

Applications for such grants may be received from groups and individuals anywhere in Ireland and in many cases are not readily identifiable with a particular geographic location. Furthermore, most of the funds granted are of their nature expended either abroad or on travel abroad. Identification of expenditure by particular regions would not, therefore, be particularly meaningful.
