Vol. 384 No. 4

Written Answers. - Goods in Intervention.

15.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the value of goods in intervention in Ireland as at 30 June, 1988 or the nearest date; and the volume of this.

The total value and quantities of public intervention stocks of agricultural products held by Ireland at the end of June 1988 were £410 million and 198,400 tonnes respectively. Of these stocks 36,600 tonnes valued at £80 million were held in foreign stores due to shortage of space here at intake time. Details of total stocks are as follows: 55,100 tonnes of bone-in beef valued at £107 million (1986 34,400 tonnes); 51,400 tonnes of boneless beef valued at £135 million (1986 71,800 tonnes); 15,800 tonnes of cereals valued at £1 million (1986 51,500 tonnes); 76,100 tonnes of butter valued at £167 million (1986 156,400 tonnes).

There were no quantities of skimmed milk powder in intervention on 30 June 1988 (1986 3,800 tonnes).

Substantial quantities of butter have been disposed of from intervention since 30 June 1988 and as of 10 November, the figure has dropped to 35,000 tonnes.
