Since taking up office I have made appointments to four vacancies which arose in the normal course. Proposals to improve the cost effectiveness of the sugar industry are, in the first instance, a matter for Siúicre Éireann. No proposals have been submitted to me by the company in regard to the closure of any particular processing plant.
