The numbers of Irish draught mares registered in each of the last five years were: 1988, 63; 1987, 76; 1986, 70; 1985, 92; 1984, 39. I am currently reviewing policy in relation to the non-thoroughbred horse breeding industry and particularly the position of Irish draughts. I share the view that the industry has considerable potential as an alternative farm enterprise.
