Vol. 384 No. 4

Written Answers. - Customs and Excise Staff Redundancies.

50.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the fact that certain officers of the Customs and Excise described as fixed officiators have been made redundant in Limerick; that all of these officers cannot be redeployed locally within the Civil Service; if he will consider reallocating them to those sections of the Revenue Commissioners being decentralised to the mid-west region; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A recent report by Customs and Excise management in the Office of the Revenue Commissioners recommended changes in the staffing levels in Customs and Excise stations including stations in the Limerick collection. As a result of these revised staffing levels a number of officers of Customs and Excise have become redundant in their present stations. It will be necessary, therefore, to redeploy these staff elsewhere within the Customs and Excise service. The arrangements in regard to this redeployment are being negotiated at present by the Commissioners with the staff union concerned.

Since there is no surplus of staff in the grade of officer of Customs and Excise the question of redeploying members of this grade from the Customs and Excise service to other areas of Revenue or to other Government Departments does not arise.
