Vol. 384 No. 4

Written Answers. - Electricity Production.

72.

asked the Minister for Energy the volume of peat used in the power station at Cahirciveen, County Kerry in monetary and volume terms; and if this was an increase or decrease from 1987.

In 1988 the ESB expect to consume about 15,135 tonnes of sod peat in Cahirciveen Power Station. The cost will be approximately £401,000.

In 1987, 9,460 tonnes costing £250,690 were consumed. The lower level of consumption in 1987 was related to a particularly bad harvest in the previous year.

asked the Minister for Energy the expected usage of natural gas by the ESB in 1988 in volume and monetary terms; and if he expects the usage by the ESB to increase or decrease in 1989.

The usage of natural gas by the ESB is a matter of commercial contract between the ESB and BGE and I do not feel, therefore, that it would be appropriate for me to comment in detail on this matter.

However, it can be taken that there will be some increase in the consumption of gas by the ESB in 1989.
