Vol. 384 No. 5

Written Answers. - National Lottery Fund Allocations.

28.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the names of the organisations to whom national lottery funds were allocated by him since assuming office; the criteria on which these allocations were made; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

National lottery moneys allotted to the Department of Social Welfare have been of great value to those working with the deprived, the homeless, the physically and mentally handicapped, the elderly, children's groups, single parents and family and women's groups. They have provided an impetus to many voluntary organisations and those who work in them. In 1988 a sum of £750,000 was made available to my Department from national lottery funds for once-off grants to projects being undertaken by voluntary organisations in the social services area. All grants under this scheme are allocated in consultation with the health boards to voluntary organisations providing social services to deprived groups and people in need. Details of the organisations to which funds have been allocated under the scheme are set out in the tabular statement which will be circulated in the Official Report.

In addition, a sum of £100,000 was allocated to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to enable the society to undertake a major programme of personal development and home management courses around the country. Over 5,000 families will be catered for in these courses which provide practical advice and assistance to people with whom the society are in contact.

Finally a sum of £50,000 is being made available for a special pilot scheme of assistance to voluntary organisations who involve unemployed people in their activities. Applications under this scheme are being considered at present.
