The 1926 and subsequent censuses of population have been taken under the Statistics Act, 1926, which guarantees the absolute confidentiality of the census returns. Under present legislation, therefore, the census returns are precluded from being made available in the same way as other State papers.
The question of access to census of population returns will be considered in the context of an updated version of the 1926 Act, currently being prepared.
