Vol. 384 No. 8

Written Answers. - Information Services.

219.

asked the Minister for Labour the amount of money provided for in 1988 and 1989 for (1) press and information activities and (2) public relations; and to whom this money is payable.

The amounts provided under subhead D — Advertising and Publicity — of my Department's Vote in 1988 and 1989 are £75,000 and £65,000 respectively.

These moneys are spent mainly on press advertising of statutory notices in regard to legislation which my Department and the Labour Court operate and on routine advertising relating to tendering for goods and services, Council of Europe Fellowships, etc.

There is also provision in the salaries subhead of my Department's Vote for an information unit headed by the Department's information officer. The main function of this unit is to deal with inquiries from the public as to their entitlements under conditions of employment and other labour legislation. Other functions include media relations activities on behalf of the Department, updating and supplying explanatory leaflets, information talks etc.
