Vol. 384 No. 8

Written Answers. - Army Spouses Medical Benefit.

241.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will investigate the setting-up of a medical benefit scheme for spouses of serving soldiers along the lines of the scheme in operation within the Garda Síochána.

Limerick West): The majority of soldiers' dependants are entitled to medical, institutional and specialist services provided under the Health Acts in civilian hospitals by the Regional Health Boards.

When the income of such personnel exceeds the eligibility limit prescribed in the Health Acts, hospital charges in respect of the treatment of dependants are met by my Department. In addition the £10 hospital service charge is paid by my Department in respect of soldiers' dependants.

It is understood that the Garda Síochána medical scheme covering dependants of members is contributory and I do not propose to set up such a scheme for the dependants of serving soldiers.
