Written Answers. - Defence Forces Pay and Allowances.

asked the Minister for Defence the current rate of (a) basic pay in respect of each rank in the Defence Forces (b) the amount of allowances paid in respect of duties in each case (c) the duration of duties in respect of such allowances (d) the respective grades, if any, in the Civil Service, to which these rates of pay are linked in respect of each rank; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick West): As regards the current rate of basic pay of each rank in the Defence Forces I refer the Deputy to the reply given to Question No. 225 on Tuesday, 22 November 1988.

The answer to (b) and (c) of the Deputy's question is as follows:—

Duty

Allowance

Period in respect of which allowance is paid

Military Service Allowance.

Junior Officers up to Captain: £774 per annum. NCOs and Privates with over 3 years service: £14.80 per week. Privates with less than 3 years service apprentices): £5.36 per week.

Payable on a continuous basis including periods fo annual leave, sick leave etc.

Security Duty Allowance.

Weekdays: £9.71 per day. Sundays and Army Holidays: £19.42 per day.

Payable in respect of each day or part of a day on which a member of the PDF is required to undertake security type duties. This allowance is not payable concurrently with Border Duty Allowance, Port-laoise Prison allowance and Army Ranger Wing Allowance.

Border Duty Allowance.

Officers: £22.82 per week. NCOs and Privates: £19.81 per week.

Payable on a continuous basis including periods of annual leave, sick leave etc. to members of the PDF attached to Border Units.

Portlaoise Prison Allowance.

All Ranks: £14.20 per day.

Payable in respect of each day's duty in Portlaoise Prison.

Army Ranger Wing Allow- ance.

All Ranks: £29.88 per week.

Payable on a continuous basis including periods of annual leave, sick leave etc.

Patrol Duty Allowance.

Lt. Commander/Commander: £9.58 per day. Lieutenant: £8.64 per day. Sub-Lieut/Ensign: £7.67 per day.

Payable to all ranks of the Naval Service in respect of each day during which they are on patrol duty aboard ship away from the Naval Base.

Chief Petty Officer: £8.64 per day.

Senior Petty Officer and Petty Officer: £7.67 per day.

Leading Seaman: £6.73 per day.

Seaman: £5.76 per day.

Overseas Allowance.

UNIFIL (Daily Allowance). Colonel, Lt. Colonel and Commandant: Married, £22.84; Single, £19.56.

Payable to all ranks of the Defence Forces serving overseas with the United Nations.

Captain, Lieutenant and Second Lieutenant: Married, £20.76, Single, £17.48.

Sergeant-Major, BQMS, Company-Sgt, CQMS, Sergeant: Married, £17.27, Single, £15.03.

Corporal: Married, £16.70, Single, £14.57.

Private: Married, £16.13, Single, £14.05.

UNFICYP (Daily Allowances) Colonel, Lt. Colonel and Commandant: Married, £14.88; Single, £11.18.

Captain, Lieutenant and Second Lieutenant: Married, £12.43; Single, £8.79.

Sergeant major, BQMS, Company

Sgt, CQMS, Sergeant:

Married, £8.64; Single, £6.14.

Corporal: Married, £8.06;

Single, £5.62.

Private: Married, £7.39;

Single, £4.99.

UNTSO (Daily Allowance)

Officers, £9.62.

In addition to the foregoing allowances members of the Defence Force may qualify for other allowances depending on their particular qualifications and circumstances.

The grades in the Civil Service to which Army ranks are linked for pay purposes are as follows:—

asked the Minister for Defence the estimated cost of a 20 per cent increase in pay and allowances to the Defence Forces; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick West): The estimated cost of a 20 per cent increase in pay and allowances of members of the Permanent Defence Force would be of the order of £35 million.
