Vol. 384 No. 8

Written Answers. - Use of Nuvan.

32.

asked the Minister for the Marine if he condones the use of nuvan, having regard to the detrimental effect this chemical has on all shellfish; and if he will ban the use of nuvan in the same manner as he banned TBT.

45.

asked the Minister for the Marine if he intends to introduce any measures to control the distribution and use of the highly toxic chemical nuvan which is now reportedly being used by some fish farmers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 32 and 45 together.

The use of nuvan to control sea lice in farmed salmon has been notified to the National Drugs Advisory Board and the use of the chemical is governed by EC pesticide directives. In addition, it is a condition of aquaculture licences issued by my Department that fish farmers must comply with the various guidelines set down for the use of chemicals such as nuvan.

Tests are now being carried out in my Department to establish the effect of nuvan on shellfish and crustaceans. Testing of alternative methods of controlling sea lice is also being carried out. I also understand that this drug is the subject of an assessment by the National Drugs Advisory Board. If it is found that the chemical has a significant effect on the marine environment, I will take steps to control its use and ban it if necessary.
