Vol. 384 No. 8

Written Answers. - Kerry Coastal Erosion.

78.

asked the Minister for Finance the money which was spent in County Kerry in 1988 on work aimed at preventing coastal erosion.

The Commissioners of Public Works are empowered to undertake coast protection works only in response to proposals made by local authorities in accordance with the provisions of the Coast Protection Act, 1963. As no proposal made by Kerry County Council has yet progressed to the stage where works could commence, the allocation of funds to the Commissioners for coast protection works in County Kerry in 1988 has not arisen.

asked the Minister for Finance the plans he has to commence work at various locations, such as Banna, Fenit Island, Ballybunion and Beale, County Kerry, to prevent coastal erosion in these areas.

Under the Coast Protection Act, 1963, the Commissioners of Public Works may undertake examinations of coastal erosion problems and execute coast protection schemes only in response to specific proposals made by local authorities in accordance with the provisions of the Act.

No such proposals for schemes at Banna or Fenit Island have been made by Kerry County Council but proposals have been received in respect of Yellow Point and Beale Strand, Ballybunion. The county council has been advised that these proposals will not be further processed, under the 1963 Act, until such time as they obtain and enforce adequate prohibitory orders under the Foreshore Act, 1933, preventing the removal of beach material, which is largely the cause of the erosion, in these areas throughout the entire year.
