83.

asked the Minister for Finance the proposals, if any, there are to transfer the Howth Harbour works, Dublin 13 from his Department to the Department of the Marine; when such a transfer is proposed; and the discussions which have taken place with the employees of the harbour works on the place and security of their future employment.

It is proposed to take Questions Nos. 82 and 83 together.

The Government have decided that all harbours at present the responsibility of the Commissioners of Public Works, including Howth and Dún Laoghaire, will be transferred to the Minister for the Marine with effect from 1 January 1989.

Discussions are taking place with unions, representing the harbour's staff concerning their future employment. It is intended that a small number of staff in Dún Laoghaire harbour will be retained by the Commissioners to deal with the maintenance of Government buildings in the Dún Laoghaire and South East Dublin areas. The work is currently handled by harbour staff. The remaining personnel will be transferred to the Department of the Marine and the Commissioners are writing to the individual employees to advise them of the situation.
