Vol. 384 No. 8

Written Answers. - Macroom (Cork) Garda Telephone Extension.

90.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will arrange, particularly during the winter months, to extend the telephone service from Inchigeela Garda station, Macroom, County Cork to the garda's house next door in order that the Garda can be contacted in the event of an emergency.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 67 on 28 October 1987 — Column 1566 of the Official Report, in which I set out the reasons for the decision by the Garda authorities to withdraw telephone extensions linking certain Garda stations to the adjacent official Garda living accommodation. In that reply I also outlined the facilities provided as part of the Garda National Communications System to enable members of the public to contact the gardaí in places where the local station is not manned 24 hours a day. In the light of the improved service which these facilities provide it is not proposed to reverse the decision relating to telephone extensions.
