Vol. 384 No. 8

Written Answers. - Standards of Transport Safety.

95.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he has satisfied himself with the standards of safety at present existing on our trains and buses.

96.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if his attention has been drawn to the gross over-crowding at times on DART trains and the inherent risks involved for passengers; if he will make inquiries to see if the situation can be improved; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 95 and 96 together.

Iarnród Éireann are using some of the most modern signalling and communication systems in the world. Their programme of replacing older rolling stock has improved the general quality and safety of their carriages. The staff are trained to operate trains in a careful and effective manner. The board has assured me that the equipment and the training are designed to ensure that safety is treated as a very high priority.

I am informed by CIE that Bus Eireann and Bus Átha Cliath have a rigorous maintenance and quality control programme to ensure that the highest safety standards are achieved in accordance with the regulations laid down under the Road Traffic Acts and that the EC social legislation on driving hours, rest periods, etc., are strictly adhered to in the interest of safety.

The board has also informed me that DART, in common with all urban rapid transit systems, is designed to cater for standing passengers, while the high passenger loads carried at peak periods may sometimes cause discomfort, the board has assured me that they are not dangerous and are not a safety risk.
