Vol. 385 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tobacco Advertising Regulations.

41.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the concerted policy of tobacco companies to circumvent the intent of the 1986 Tobacco Regulations concerning advertising at retail points of sale by the introduction of large illuminated and unlit advertising signs for cigarettes immediately inside retail shop windows for external impact; and if he will amend the regulations as a matter of urgency to eliminate this circumvention and to control the extent of internal advertising at retail points of sale.

My Department has been in touch with the tobacco industry about the signs mentioned by the Deputy in his question and is currently considering the industry's response in the matter. In the event of an unsatisfactory outcome, I will consider amending the regulations appropriately.
