Vol. 386 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Kildare Employment Exchange.

120.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of persons from Leixlip, County Kildare who are claiming social welfare benefit from the Maynooth employment exchange, County Kildare; and the plans he has to locate a similar facility for the people of Leixlip.

At present a total of 543 people from Leixlip have claims to unemployment payments or are signing for credits at the branch employment office in Maynooth. Those claiming payments are required to attend on a weekly basis, while those signing for credits only do so once a month.

I am conscious of the need to improve facilities for the general public and to bring my Department's services closer to the communities it serves. I have had the volume of claims, which is affected by, inter alia, expanding populations, in the various parts of the greater Dublin area monitored. Several new offices have been provided in this area in recent years and I plan to open a further two, in areas of greatest need, later this year.

While I have no immediate plans to provide additional local office facilities to cater specifically for the town of Leixlip, I can assure the Deputy that I am having the position in the area generally kept under continuous review.
