Vol. 386 No. 1

Written Answers. - Unemployment Register.

134.

(Limerick East) and Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of persons disqualified from the unemployment register in (a) 1986 (b) 1987 and (c) 1988.

Statistics are not maintained in a manner which would enable the information requested to be furnished. In some cases claimants may, for reasons which are not known, discontinue signing the live register in the course of or following an investigation of their cases and before decisions are given. Most decisions on reviews of entitlement are given by deciding officers in local employment exchanges while the remainder are decided at head office. In each instance of a disqualification there is a right of appeal.

135.

(Limerick East) and Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total number of persons taken off the unemployment register in (a) 1987 and (b) 1988 due to non-participation in the Jobsearch courses or through their failure to turn up for interview notified under the Jobsearch programme.

It is assumed that what the Deputies have in mind are the 1987 and 1988 figures in respect of those on the live register who received invitations to participate in the National Jobsearch Programme and who were subsequently disallowed arising from their failure to avail of assistance offered under the programme. The number of people disallowed in 1987 was 1,951 and in 1988 was 1,561.
