Vol. 386 No. 1

Written Answers. - Arranmore Island (Donegal) Post-Primary Students.

264.

asked the Minister for Education, in view of the fact that the community school in Falcarragh, County Donegal cannot facilitate female boarding students from 1992 onwards, the steps she intends to take to ensure that the students from Arranmore Island, County Donegal, have access to post-primary education.

Sufficient school accommodation is available in Falcarragh community school. As regards boarding facilities for pupils, my Department has a grant scheme to assist pupils in this respect. There is a hostel which is run by Franciscan Sisters which can accommodate up to 35 girl boarders. This hostel is fully booked up until 1992 but shall continue to facilitate the boarding pupils. A site is being acquired for the proposed community college on Arranmore Island.

asked the Minister for Education, in view of the considerable travelling expenses incurred by post-primary students from Arranmore Island, County Donegal who have to travel to and from their homes each weekend, if she will extend the free travel equivalent to that of day pupils attending post-primary schools.

The question of extending the free school transport scheme to students from Arranmore Island who attend post-primary schools on the mainland does not arise as these students are already in receipt of boarding grants from my Department as they live outside the range of school transport.
